Exhaust System

Your vehicle exhaust system is built of many parts starting at your engine and ending at the tailpipe. It works hard to keep your engine working at its optimal level while reducing harmful emissions and dampening noise. It gets quite the beating from high temperatures, vibrations, corrosion from internal gases and acids and external moisture, road salt, and sometimes a little jolt from a speed bump or Spring road crater.

You do not need to know and you might not even care but for those inquiring minds, here is how the Exhaust System works.

Exhaust Manifold

The exhaust manifold can be made of steel, aluminum, stainless steel, or more commonly cast iron. It attaches to each cylinder to combine into one pipe

Step2 - Oxygen sensor

Oxygen Sensor

The Oxygen Sensor mesaures oxugen levels in the exhaust to maintain maximum fuel economy. It is mounted in the exhaust manifold or close to it in the exhaust pipe.

Step 3- Catalytic converter

Catalytic converter

Converts harmful carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons to water vapor and carbon dioxide and reduces harmful nitrogen oxides. The converter is mounted between the exhaust manifold and the muffler.

Marker-4 Clamps & Hangers

Clamps & Hnagers

Clamps and hangers ensure the exhaust system parts have a seamless join and youe exhsuat system is firmly secured in the under carriage of your vehicle.

Marker-5 Muffler

Muffler

Most mufflers use baffles to bounce the exhaust around dissipating the energy and quieting the noise. If your muffler has a hole in it it is extremely noisy.

Step 6 - Exhaust Pipes

Exhaust Pipes

Exhaust pipes join each component between the manifold and tail pipe. It is made of aluminized steel which has better corrosion resistance than plain steel but not better than stainless steel.

Step7 - Resonator

Resonator

Many exhaust systems also include a resonator located before or after the muffler. These "mini-muffler" are usually straight pipes filled with sound muffling materials.

Step 8 Tailpipe

Tailpipes

The tailpipe or tailpipes are located at the rear of the vehicle. Gace and vapours travel through the ecxhaust system from the manifold and exit at the tailpipe.

When do you need a service appointment

There are some very apparent signs that you may need to bring your vehicle to our auto service center for exhaust systems repair.

Noises

Noise in your exhaust system can be caused by corrosion, holes or cracks, pipe blockages, and loose or broken clamps. Thee noise vary from really loud roars, hissing, chugging or continuous knocking or clanging.

Emissions

When an exhaust system is healthy, there should be no noticeable emission from your tailpipe except when you first start your car and the engine is warming up. If you still see smoke after your car is warmed up there is something wrong. Blue smoke is indicative of oil burning and black smoke means that you have a leak in the system or your engine is sick.

Visual Damage

Some damage that you can see is rust, holes, drooping tail pipe and muffler. These are all issues that require a exhaust system repair call.

Visual check for leaking fluids including the steering rack.

Brakes Inspection

Front and Rear pads and rotors, visual inspection of the pad life and brake rotor health, visual check for leaks in brake lines

Tire Health

We check tire depth, pressure, and look for any cracks or uneven wear.

Exhaust

We visually check the exhaust for any holes and broken or weak brackets in pipes or muffler.

Underhood

Visual inspection of belts, battery and check fluid levels.
